I know this has nothing to do with runaway truck ramps but when I was in Europe on a trip going from Monaco to Rome our tour bus driver said it was law that he stop every 4 hours for a break. Is this law everywhere in Europe? Does it pertain to bus drivers only or also multi-axle trucks?

For truckers I think it’s 8 hours they have to take a break

Every 8 huors (total driving time) there needs to be 1 lunch brake (30min) and 2 “coffee brakes” (15min) making the total time on 9 huors. After that you must have 8 hours of rest before you can continue.
There used to me “tachographs” that collect the truck’s speed and driven hours (small cardboard disc) and yuo had to carry last 30 days of those disc with you all the time.
Failing to show the 30 day tachograph data to police if he asksto see them will have rather heavy penaltys. (looking up to 300-2000usd fine depending on country you are in) and for those nations that use point system on their license, it might cost some points.

These were common in Portugal and Spain way back in 80’s and 90’s. Luckily breaks have evolved on trucks and so on trailers, aids like retarder and alike so these are rarely used now.

My grandfather knew someone that died when his truck went all the way up the ramp and fell off the back.

Once saw a couple having a picnic on a truck ramp. Needless to say, I went back and interrupted it for them. They moved their picnic elsewhere. Yes, I’m fun at parties.
