You Need To See This 1600bhp Golf's Two Turbocharged VR6s

As disappointing as the MkIII VW Golf was in almost every way, it's impossible not to feel the shock and awe of this drag missile powered by two separate turbocharged VR6 blocks

The third-generation Volkswagen Golf GTI took a lot of stick for the fact that it had all the pace and dynamism of an episode of Downton Abbey. That’s not a criticism you can level at this one, though. Because it has two – yes, two – turbocharged VR6 engines.

The build isn’t new; it was first spotted running competitively in the nines last year, but further refinements and improvements have created a 1600bhp Kermit-green hatchback that will run 9.0-second quarter-miles and cross the half-mile line at over 180mph.

The front engine drives the front wheels and the rear drives the rears, meaning that with a few adjustments from the driver it can lay down sick burnouts at either end. It’s so damn fast, it even has a parachute brake. It’s one of the maddest drag builds around and you just can’t help but love the way it slingshots down the strip.

But why didn’t he use a single VR6? Surely all the weight and such doesn’t do it good and having a single 1600hp VR6 going to all 4 wheels would have the same or similar result?

Yes, but 1600 bhp from a 2.9 litre engine is a very sketchy idea. Unless, of course, you enjoy rebuilding the engine after every run.
That’s would be more than 500 bhp per litre. Similar to a Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost with 500 bhp or a Corvette C6 Z06 with 3500 bhp on the stock block. Just ridiculous.

Technically yes, but you can’t get 1600hp out of a VR6. Getting 800hp out of one requires extensive modifications (forged internals, possibly entirely custom designed cylinder heads). There are engines you can get 1600hp out of, but the Volkswagen VR6 is not one of them. Volkswagen fans really love that engine though, so that’s probably why he used it (or 2 of it to be exact).
