#onthisdayinf1 -- 25 years ago, James Hunt passed away at aged just 45 from a heart attack.

James Hunt is the 1976 World Drivers Champion, winning his only championship with McLaren in the M23, powered by the iconic Ford-Cosworth DFV V8.

James was a veteran of 10 race wins.

He is probably best known for his ‘76 title battle with Ferrari driver Niki Lauda. The Austrian put up a fight right up until the last race of the season, in Fuji, Japan.

Hunt won the title by a single point, after Lauda’s retirement from the race — Lauda’s famous Nürburgring crash also allowed Hunt to catch up in the championship race.

After retiring from racing, he went on to be a TV broadcaster. He also famously sat alongside the iconic Murray Walker in the Grand Prix commentary box — using his famous straight-to-the-point commentary style.

James is also known as F1’s last playboy, due to his lavish lifestyle, featuring a fair few women.

James’ son, Freddie, continues the Hunt legacy and is also a racing driver.

James peacefully passed away due to a heart attack at his home on this day in 1993.
