A Small-ish Blog About Cars: The Infiniti M45 Sport (Y50 Generation)

In the veritable arsenal of performance-viable civilian cars that many Nissans and Infinitis are well known for, most Nissan-oriented fans usually look to the S-Chassis, Skyline, and Z families for fairly inexpensive yet reliable and adequately practical cars with tons of potential left over for tuning and modifications. But among these top dogs is a car that not many people seem to view as something they might have fun slinging around the B-roads, joyously overtaking everybody in the highways, or even go sideways in a veil of tire smoke and burnt rubber.

That car is the Infiniti M45 S. Specifically, the model in particular is the “Y50” generation from 2004-2008.

Also identified as the (arguably cooler name) Nissan Fuga mostly in Japan, this full-size budget luxury sedan was introduced as a Japanese competitor against the likes of the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes Benz E-Class, Audi A6, Lexus GS, and the Cadillac CTS. While it wasn’t particularly amazing or eventful, it still remained a solid alternative and had ample success as a Nissan sales icon. The Y50 M45 S was typically powered by the VQ35DE or VQ35HR, both engines that are the basic V6 engines used commonly in a wide range of luxury-level Nissans, like the Infiniti G35, G37, 350Z, Cima, and etc., and the car utilized an ordinary RWD layout like most luxury cars at the time. The AWD models, M35x and M45x are equipped with the famed ATTESA-ETS sports suspension system derived from the Skyline R32 and R33 GT-R among other Nissans that promotes all power to the rear wheels until major slippage is encountered.

It wasn’t too long before car enthusiasts got their hands to these land barges, and soon, like most other older Nissan sports/luxury cars, many M45s were taken to the gutters and modified to the owner’s liking. The platform, size, layout, ergonomics inside and out and engine were just right in the eyes of these tuners, and they found it surprisingly easy to modify them into whatever they wished it to be. The Y50 M45 S has a cult following like all the other popular Nissan sports cars, and they can be eye candy to four-door enthusiasts.

Even Chris Forsberg owns a M45 used for drifting, and it looks pretty damn cool.

Regardless of how you are going to configure a M45 if you plan to own one soon, it is a dependable car with tons of practicality and viability for daily driving yet can be deceptively energetic and spirited to drive if pushed hard. All in all, however you call the car, M45 or Fuga, this Infiniti is starting to become a bargain four door cruiser for the one who wants a true-to-heart Jack-of-all-stats car, able to be tuned to overtake sports cars, all the while hauling home your groceries, friends, pets and/or family in a comfortable, refined fashion. It’s a win-win as far as it goes; you are able to enjoy spirited driving while your passengers can rest easy in the fairly solid and well-accommodating interior. +

Infiniti Ms definitely are underratedly cool buggers. Unfortunately, I’m more into V8 performance sedans. Or R34 sedans. Love both to death.

Well, there is a V8 variant of the M45, but I’m afraid it wouldn’t quite feel the same as the more mainstream V6 powered version…
