The Fastest Transmission: The CVT

Thanks for explaining this for us. CVT and automatic transmissions are very confusing! Manual is simple, DCT I can finally understand too since mechanics are similar to a manual. Too bad - like you said - consumer wants contradict the benefits of having CVT technology.

I will say, that CVT is in theory, the absolute best, because you can stay wherever you need to be in the powerband, and you can operate at really low RPM’s, so you get great fuel consumption, but I don’t think there’s any system out there that makes use of the true potential of CVT, so for now, the best transmission for racing situations is the DCT.

CVT was tested on Williams F1 car during early 90s but FIA banned it because in testing it was way too fast compared to others (and it sounded silly, according to Bernie)

My Audi A4 daily has å CVT and i love It, in my opinion the CVT is perfect for daily driving and ling trips. Its so smoth an comfortable to drive, and because your engine is allways in low rpm(ecsept under acceleration) it use almodt no fuel.( I average 4.5L in 100km)

Looking forward to all the comments hating on CVT by people that don’t understand the concept and the benefits and that they are controlled by computers…

I love them! The best part about them is the high failure rate, it keeps me in a job. I’d never own one though

Is there a way to vary the target RPM on CVT’s? It would seam to me that for the most flexible performance, you would want the CVT’s target RPM to vary depending on how hard you are stepping on the peddle.

Putting the CVT potential on side my enviromentalist, ecologist and clishe hipster colegue bought an used Prius. The car was nice and queth under 80km/h but above 100 was loud and really unresponsive on the accelerating side. Happy ending: he hate sold it afther 6 months and now owns an LPG Volvo V90 and awaits for the new leaf.

I had a cvt in my MG ZS 120. It was the worst gear box I’ve ever come across. I’m not saying all CVT’s are cack but the older BMW/Mini & MG Rover ones are. I believe there was even a court case in the US where the people took BMW Mini to court due to constant and expensive failures.
The Williams F1 team tested a CVT in their FW15c too.

CVT cannot hold power, that is there only main problem. look at the flex in the rubber gear teeth and the chain itself. until someone makes a geared CVT with no flex or frictional loss, aka how a dragster gets off the line.

Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT can hold plenty of power. It’s offered in the new WRX and would be able to handle the STI’s power if they put it in.

CVTs are allready integratet in the german FENDT VARIO Series(tractors) and the finisch VALTRA(tractors). CVTs works really good. If you take a look at the aclleration of those tractors.
