Daily driving a diesel truck?

So I’ve got my race car but I am in need of a 4x4 for the winter. I know a gas truck would be much cheaper and do the same for me but I’ve always loved diesel’s. I still may end up with a gas truck but I was wondering what to expect with a diesel daily driver?

Diesels are great vehicles in their respect but for a daily driver winter vehicle there are some things to take into consideration. You have to be a little patient sometimes, diesel vehicles in general are known to be notoriously hard to start in the winter time. The diesel starts to gel and then the injectors don’t work as well. It would be in your best intrest to invest in a block heater. Also just like gas trucks, you should find a truck that fits your needs. What i mean by this is if you don’t need to haul things all the time, you dont need a ford f-350 or some ludicrisly huge vehicle. Just something to keep in consideration. If you have anymore questions just leave them below and ill do my best to answer.

Thanks for your input! I absolutely dont need a diesel and for sure don’t need a 1 ton truck but its something I’ve always wanted. I dont need a 2 seat sports car but I’ve got one because thats what I wanted. That being said I need to remind my self that this is a daily driver, not my toy. Again, thanks for the input!

When i tell you youre going to tell me to get a midsize 4 door truck or suv. Thats really what i need but i hate the way they look asside from a select few. I need 4 wheel drive preferably auto trans so my soon to be wife can drive it. Extended cab or 4 door. I dont tow anything asside from a 5 x 10 foot long utility trailer occasionally. Ideally my perfect 4x4 is like I said a mid size truck or suv but thats not what I want. Lol.

What i want is an extended or crew cab F350 4x4 with a 7.3 Powerstroke.

Alright while i can see how you don’t want a midsize truck or suv (which in someways is a good thing) you definatly don’t want on f-350 and because your just getting into the swing of things the massive size can be intimidating expessialy to your soon to be wife (unless she drives trucks i don’t know her). what i would reccomend because you don’t want a compact to midsize truck but cant get an f-350 is a half ton pickup, whether it be a Ford f-150, Chevrolet 1500, GMC Sierra 1500 or Dodge Ram 1500 is up to you. If you want the ram avoid the models from the 90’s to early 00’s because they are prone to rust and reliabilty issues. Chevy, GMC, and Ford are pretty good but i would reccomend test driving each one before finally making a purchase.

Size wouldnt be an issue. Ive been around big trucks and driven several in the past. Ive just never owned a diesel so i wasnt sure what im getting into. Ill probably end up in a 1/2 or 3/4 ton truck of some type.

Well because you said you were looking a ford f-350 i assume you like ford so i would say a 2000 Ford F-250 with the 7.3 powerstroke diesel it is a pretty good year for it but like i said, make sure you test drive it before you buy it.

Its funny you say that because i found a 2001 f250 extended cab with a 7.3 for $6400 near me. Im just waiting to hear back from the person.

The 01’s arent bad but something to keep in mind is that the connecting rods are not as strong as the year prior, they are made out of powdered-metal. The 2000 is made out of forged steel. Like i said not bad but it is something to keep in mind.

My 08 F350 gets about 13 mpg. Terrible mileage, I drive 70+ miles a day for work. Insurance isn’t great either $200 a month.

Fuel economy isnt a concern. My commute is roughly 30 miles a day

Not saying Dodge or Fords are bad but I’ve been around a lot of Duramax trucks and I think you wouldn’t be disappointed. Never had any trouble with the trucks at my work and my relatives and co workers than own them have nothing but good things to say about them. Plus, the Allison transmissions are freakin awesome.

Diesels get WAY better gas mileage. I have a gas truck and i get 11 combined. I do drive hard but most ive gotten is 13. Id get a duramax or a cummins. Not saying fords are bad, but ive had experience with the two
