Engineering Explained “Resting your hand on the gearshift” - I think that depends on whether the shifter is connected directly to the gearbox. For example- in case of a rear-mounted transmission, the gear lever could be connected to the actual shifter mechanism via a cable. So, resting your hand on the gearshift shouldn’t have any adverse effect.

Another thing about leaving your car in gear with your foot on the clutch while stopped is that it also wears the diaphragm spring out

resting your hand on the gear-lever might cause wear, but it’s not that significant, as long as you’re not applying a lot of pressure. I tend to keep my hand on the gear lever while i’m cruising steadily, though people seem to think i’m trying to race somebody. I keep my hand on the gear lever while cruising because i want to be fully prepared to downshift if i need to do quick thinking to avoid a sudden accident. I understand why feathering the throttle would shorten the lifespan of the clutch, but you gotta understand that most people who drive manuals will always be afraid of stalling on a hill-start no matter how good they are, and they usually tend to do it only for a few seconds to wait for traffic to pass (if at an intersection), and sometimes a weak handbrake is also a contributing factor. Leaving the car in gear while stopping at traffic lights, i only do that for short periods of time incase i’m at the front at the traffic-light intersection so that i can get a move-on incase the light doesn’t stay red for that long, cuz people behind you in traffic tend to get very irritable if you don’t move quickly, even if the light has only just turned green. I know that a lot of people don’t rest their foot on the clutch-pedal while driving, but i’ll say a bigger problem is when you are leaving it in gear and you can’t hold the clutch in properly, or letting off the clutch pedal without realizing it.

When you use the handbrake, shouldnt you press the button on the lever? I thought by not pressing that button you would unnecessarily stress the handbrake cable, causing it to wear faster.
