7 Reasons Why The Subaru BRZ Engine Bay Is Winning.

Engineering Explained
  1. Engine is placed down low, and as far back as possible.
  2. Boxer engines already have a low CG.
  3. No large obnoxious engine covers.
  4. Single quick tab for accessing the fuse box.
  5. Quick tabs for accessing the air filter.
  6. Oil filter is right up top, very easy access.
  7. Battery is placed on the passenger side, as far back as possible, and is still easily accessible. Excellent from a weight distribution perspective.

But such low HP, that car needs at least 300.

Are you sure they’ve moved the engine as far back as possible? I had a look once and there was still quite a gap between the engine and the firewall.

Apart from point 2 a Hyundai i10 has the same attributes. Everything is easy to access , the engine is low in the chassis and close to fire wall (not for performance though) and they have air filters on top instead of engine covers. Basically you’re saying the Subaru is surprisingly well laid out for a performance car with a boxer engine.. (ps I love the Subaru BRZ I just like picking holes, also big fan of engineering explained videos)

Once again, more reasons of why it is my favorite car.

Why I don’t like it: no room for turbo!

Tell me just how ‘winning’ it is when you realize you need to change your spark plugs. Have fun digging.

When it is time for plugs, it’s time for an LS swap.

Yup, engine out according to the service manual. Luckily it’s not until 60k miles I think, on the GT86 anyway.

Its not that difficult. Unbolt motor mounts, jack up one side from exhaust manifold, then get to work.

Does the 86/frs has any differences?

In the engine bay - absolutely none from what I can tell. The twins are identical in that regard I think.

Only interior and front bumpers

A brz/frs is just a newer and more expensive Porsche 944, compared to a base model the 944 is barely slower 0-60 and handles just as well, the 944S and 944 turbo outperforms the brz/frs in every aspect at a fraction of the cost

Yeah but those maintenance costs though…

I own 2 Porsche 944 turbo and I agree with the other comment, they are quite expensive to maintain. The BRZ is for someone who wants trouble free fun and a warranty. With an old 44 you know you have the prestige and the pedigree, however you also have to deal with all the maintenance and problems of a 30-yr old car… I wouldn’t trade my car for a BRZ but I sure as hell understand that someone would rather go for a BRZ!

1 reason why it’s not winning: lack of turbo.

V-Tech and EcoBoost kicked in yo

This car needs a bit more power and some stickier rubber and it could prove to be serious threat at the track. It handles great and is very responsive. Great drivers cars that makes you appreciate having low power to enjoy the feel. That sound box is lame idea however…

Agreed. I’m certainly opposed to artificial noise amplification. At least this one actually comes from the intake and isn’t a speaker. Still, no thank you!

Isn’t the boxer perfectly balenced too?
I love the GT86/BRZ. I think these days cars are getting too powerful. Anything more than 250bhp and you can’t put your foot down for more than a few seconds without the risk of loosing your licence! Sometimes it’s nice to have something with a small revvy engine that has to be screwed to make progress.

funny that everyone complaints about the 86/brz/frs’s low power figure but no ae86’s even low power figure
