having the brake calipers inbound of the axles does give cg advantages….but it also gives a better steering lock. this is especially obvious between 1 series and golf -packaging a fwd car means less space for steering components too

This is somewhat incorrect, almost 100% of the time the brake caliper is in a easy to package location, most performance cars have a forward mounted steering rack which only leaves room for the caliper in the back of the wheel. The steering system is heavier than the aluminum calipers, so it is not for weight reasons. Economy cars almost always have a rear steering rack location because it makes the subframe and packaging simpler. Sometimes the explanation is much simpler then expected.
