Unwanted Attention: What Types of Cars Attract Police? 🚔
Most of us have been in a car pulled over by the police at at least one point in our lives. It’s obviously not the most joyful experience in the world, and the car you’re driving has a definite affect on how much police attention you attract. That being said, which cars are the worst? Having owned a large variety of different types of cars from different eras, here are my experiences:
The Japanese Sports Car
This was my most recent car, and it attracted some serious police attention for being such a modest looking car (to my eye). It was almost completely factory, but it still prompted some friendly neighborhood officers to turn around to follow me for a mile or two on more than one occasion. The car wasn’t excessively fast in a straight line, and that’s probably what saved me from tickets.
Unwanted Attention Rating: 3/5 🚔🚔🚔
The Euro Hot Hatch
This one was surprisingly under-the-radar. Not once did I get hassled or followed by cops. My best guess was that either cops didn’t know what it was, or the silver color helped it blend in. Either way, this was probably one of my best overall turbo sleeper cars.
Unwanted Attention Rating: 1/5 🚔
The Old School Muscle
Although it may not seem like it, this is the best car I’ve ever owned for avoiding police “attention”. Even though it’s loud, fast, and red, I’ve never even been close to a ticket in it. It would be inaccurate to say cops don’t look at the car, but the end result is that I basically get a free pass since it’s a classic. I once drove past a cop with open headers, no hood, and no installed seat belts. They didn’t look twice.
Unwanted Attention Rating: 1/5 🚔
The Modern Muscle
I owned my Mustang longer than I’ve owned any other car, and it still holds the record for the most tickets I’ve ever received in any single car. I got pulled over for everything from speeding to dead headlights (and everything in between). This car was a complete cop magnet, and I was hassled to no end. I loved the car, but you couldn’t get away with anything.
Unwanted Attention Rating: 5/5 🚔🚔🚔🚔🚔
The Bike
While this one isn’t specifically a car, it’s still worth including. The color alone was enough to catch some sideways glances from johnny law, but I never actually received a ticket on it. That being said, riding it is just asking for a traffic fine.
Unwanted Attention Rating: 2/5 🚔🚔

What about them?
When I was a kid, my dad got pulled over once. This is what the police officer said: “Your tires are a bit low.” It stayed a relevant joke for three months.
A ricer would be 0/5 because even cops know that their cars are eye catching but slow as s*it…
I disagree. They probably catch loads of attention for disturbing the peace.
Old school muscle. By far. Big, loud, extremely noticeable. I, my dad, and my uncle (both more in the past than I) have always had a wee bit of trouble with cops. I’ve never been pulled over, but I’ve been followed more than once. Probably because they see a ridiculously loud car with a young driver.
I’ll bet you that if it was an older driver, they wouldn’t bat an eye. I think that who is driving the car has a lot to do with it. If they see a new driver, they are either going to give it a pass if it’s not a major violation, not wanting to wreck the kid, or pull them over every time if it’s something like speeding. If it were someone a little older in a muscle car (mid to late 30’s, early 40’s) then it’s a bit of a toss up, but I’m thinking that if you were a gray haired guy with a gray beard, you’d get nothing while driving a muscle car.
main reason i get pulled over is when i stop at red lights/intersections and launches away and the cops complain about my loud exhaust :( but once i got a compliment about the sound :D
but cop magnet? maybe 5-6/10 :P
If cops choose to pull over certain cars just because they look fast or are modified, they should be kicked out of the police force. They don’t deserve to be cops.
Well at least they’d be the reason why the NSX is the ultimate getaway car.
That’s a little extreme.
I am almost invisible for police with my old straigh piped 900 on 17”. To be honest I drive fast and lound and police never stoped me ……..
You know why you never get pulled over? Its a Saab…
The cops are afraid that you crush their cars thats why they dont try to pull you over :P
I can 100% confirm that. I own a Volvo 940 Turbo and even with mods the cops don’t even think about checking the car when they pull over for an alc test.
Yhea! Another fellow 900 driver! My vert is literally invisible to the police it’s great
My saab would attract a lot of attention…if it was road legal
The 300ZX attracts a lot of attention stock. I’m beyond screwed with long tube headers and straight pipes…
My flat black 72 olds was a cop magnet back when I had it. Super loud and cammed= cops everywhere.
M cars?
