What engines can you think of that had a very low specific output for the time they were produced? I'm thinking engines like the Iron Duke...

First VW Beetle had about 24hp from 1.1 engine, not so bad in 1950, but it was produced for 50 years and in Mexico it’s 1.6 in 1990s had 40hp…

The ship I’m on has two engines with specific power output of 17.7hp/L. Maximum rpm is 750, producing 5985hp with 338litres capacity. Can anyone beat that?

I’m not raising a hate but…
I’m sorry I have to say the Subaru EJ16 H4 has low specific output.
1.6 flat four, NA, 90hp.
A 4A-GE which is older can output a 128hp.

I think flat engines may have low center of gravity, but low outputs as well because of the lack of gravity the cylinders experience, which also decreases momentum.

Toyota 2KD-FTV 2500 cc diesel 101 hp 260 Nm. Nissan MR20DD 2.0 gas 137 hp. Considering it is a DIRECT injection gasoline 137 hp is totally unimpressive.

Mitsubishi 4G64 with 140 hp. What kind of 2.4 makes only 140 bhp?? waste of a 0.4 liter.

Isuzu 4JK1 2.5 diesel. Single turbo 134 hp. TWIN turbo 160 hp. Pathetic for a modern “CRDI” diesel.

Not pathetic but quite average for commercial engines. Its like saying “my new truck only does 100mph but my 20yr old sport saloon does 155”.

it is not a dramatic difference but I had to mention it:
VR6 engine from the VWs : 2.8 L - 170 hp
Audis 20 valve, 2.3 L inline 5 engine (non turbo) - 170 hp
