A New Grand Tour Trailer Is Here And Things Are Going A Bit Wrong

What happens if Clarkson, Hammond, May and their massive entourage of filmmakers try to shoot a feature without any kind of script or planning? We're about to find out

It’s that time of the week when we can bring you the latest trailer for The Grand Tour. Happy days. But things are not quite as we know them…

Critics of the former Top Gear hosts have long said that both the BBC motoring show and The Grand Tour are too scripted. In this week’s episode the on-location film has no script at all, or so we’re led to believe.

The only element of a plan is a start location in Croatia. There are no parameters for what car to bring, so they’re not comparable. Clarkson brings an Audi TT RS, Hammond an Ariel Nomad and May a Lada that for some reason he’s converted into a fire engine.

Hammond manages to cook the clutch on the Nomad as part of an attempted drag race, May’s fire engine meets a watery end and the studio guests are Alfie Boe and Michael Ball. Hammond also gets acquainted with the McLaren 720S, which, as we know, is very fast.

For the main feature the absence of a script means there are no pre-set filming locations and it all looks a bit… rudderless; not quite as spectacular as usual. The interaction between the three stooges, we’re promised, is totally improvised, and the overall aim, so says the show’s YouTube channel, is to make the point that some kind of a script is actually necessary.

It’s either going to be classic Clarkson, Hammond and May, or it’s going to be train wreck TV. We’re looking forward to finding out.

I really don’t think it’s nice of people endlessly complaining that the show is too scripted. I have enjoyed all of The Grand Tour’s episodes so far and I am glad that we can still see them doing their best to keep us entertained, so scripted or not, I’ll still be watching these three.

It’ll be… interesting. Scripts are necessary, as long as they come out well.
