Remastered Renault Twingo To Return As Super-Cheap Electric City Car

Renault’s retro revival is marching on. We already knew a reborn version of the 5 hatchback would be coming and now, the Twingo is taking on a new EV life.

Unveiled today in concept form, the new Twingo takes on the iconic styling of the original, complete with frog-like headlights (helped further by the choice of green paint) and the three vents on the bonnet.

Details on the production car are scarce for now. We know it’s planned for a 2026 arrival with a target list price under €20,000 (approx. £17k) and under €100 monthly on finance. It’s said it’ll also offer an efficiency of 6.2mi/kWh as well as 75 per cent lower emissions over its lifecycle compared with the “average European ICE car”. Renault has also confirmed the reborn Twingo will be built in Europe.

Whether or not it shares a platform with the Dacia Spring, Renault Group’s other cheap, tiny electric car, the larger dimensions of the Twingo concept suggest that isn’t the case. It’s expected it’ll directly replace the current ICE-powered Twingo, and sit underneath the upcoming 5 - itself serving as a direct replacement for the Zoe.

That would complete a trio of Renault EV hatchbacks, with the Megane its largest battery-powered offering at the moment. Additionally, the Renault 4 crossover and a new Scenic E-Tech MPV are in the works. The latter is said to have a target of 388 miles between charges on the WLTP cycle.

It’s worth keeping in mind that Renault-owned Alpine is making the switch to electric, too. The Renault 5-based A290 is set to arrive next year, with six other EVs by 2030. At least one will be a direct A110 replacement, though the others remain a mystery. Renault, you could do the funniest thing with the Twingo…
