Someone's Already Working On A 2JZ-Powered A90 Toyota Supra

D1 GP Drift legend Daigo Saito will be competing in an A90 Supra this year, complete with a 2JZ-GTE engine

It was only a matter of time, wasn’t it? Hopefully silencing all those keyboard warriors who - for some reason - thought it was feasible for Toyota to design, engineer and sell a brand-new powered by a near-30-year-old engine, a 2JZ-powered A90 Supra is actually happening.

The car is being built at D1 GP drifter Daigo Saito’s Fat Five Racing in the Greater Tokyo Area. You might remember a rear-while drive, drift-spec Lamborghini Murcielago from the same brilliantly mad people.

The 2JZ straight-six in question displaces 3352cc and will be good for around 800bhp. Other modifications will include a widebody kit, and inevitably, all the usual drift car accouterments like a hydraulic handbrake and a big increase in steering angle. We’re expecting HKS to have some involvement with the car, the Japanese firm having supplied suspension components and other parts for some of Saito’s previous projects.

We won’t have to wait that long until we see the finished article, either: the car - thought to be the world’s first drift-spec A90 GR Supra - will make its debut at the D1GP All Star Shootout on 23 March in Odaiba, Tokyo.

We’ve no doubt how much it’ll cost to build, but whatever the figure, it’s going to work out better value than a $173,600 A80 Supra.

That’s one of the most passive aggressive things I’ve ever read

Imagine sinking your life savings into your 2JZ A90 with Garrett turbos just to get f*ing merked by Aaron and his B58 Supra with an eBay chip, and blaming it on the fact that you forgot to pray to your Paul Walker shrine this morning

Only for that B58 to break down 20 seconds later from the vanoss being broken, the MAF sensor causing the car to go into limp mode and the transmission giving up alltogether……. not a supra lover by any means but lets be honest. BMW, power and reliability dont go into the same pot and i’m damn tired of fanboys claiming the BMW engine is gonna be reliable

Judging from the amount of chassis modification, only the outer shell was left from the original car thus undermining work of thousands of engineers, IMHO looks to me like a publicity stunt, should’ve just tuned the original engine to see how much it would make.

Obviously it’s not for whatever’s easiest or what makes the most sense, it’s for attention to make him stand out, like Aasbo and Sceriffo in fd.

Sadly i keep seeing people make ludicrous claims “2jz 900-950hp stock bottom end” bullshit a 2jz will blow up at 600-650 and a B58 has been taken to 750hp on stock bottom end
